What makes an excellent translation?

An excellent translation, besides being complete and correct, is one that reads as if it hadn't been translated.

In order to achieve this goal my stated philosophy is to:

• Work only in areas in which I possess longstanding expertise
• Apply stringent quality control processes
• Identify with my clients and their messages

While a quality control process may include various steps to ensure completeness and formal accuracy, there is only one way to make a translation read like an original: insight. If the translator doesn't have a thorough knowledge of the subject matter, the result will be awkward or ambiguous and the impact on the reader will be different from that of the original.

That is why I translate only in areas which I know from hands-on experience or continuous professional education. And while I have the varied background and research skills necessary to quickly grasp the basics of a new field, I will never be as comfortable as in my longstanding areas of specialization.
